The Minstrel

This minstrel figure in this tapestry was originally designed by William Morris around 1890, with background design by his associate J H Dearle. William Morris is well-known as the founder of the English firm of Morris & Company, whose workshops were established at Merton Abbey in Surrey. It is thought that this panel was originally woven by Morris & Co in the 1890s.

From studying an old French Arts and Crafts manual, William Morris taught himself the technique of tapestry-weaving, and spent many hours weaving his first experimental tapestry by hand in his bedroom at Kelmscott House in Hammersmith, London. Morris thereafter taught his workmen the technique, and is thereby attributed with reviving the craft of tapestry-weaving in England during the last quarter of the 19th century.
